OBJECTIVE
To
obtain a position committed to improving the performance of
health systems in low and middle-income countries. Currently accepting contracts.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Building upon my
doctoral research and continuing in the field of global health systems
research, I would like to focus the next phase of my research career on: understanding
the role of communities in health systems research, identifying best practices
in integrated primary care service delivery, and applying the lessons learned
from HIV as a chronic disease to strengthen primary health care through patient
centered health systems in low and middle income countries.

Guidance for Building Resilience in Health Systems
Currently leading a study on
documenting experiences and lessons in building resilience in health systems. Objectives
include:
·
To
document experiences in five countries (three Ebola Virus Disease affected
countries, Ethiopia, Nepal), in terms of lessons and guidance to inform the

resilience building interventions, and to inform UNICEF’s and other development
partners’ future work on health systems (including how health systems can
contribute to resilience).

To
assist countries to build more resilient health systems by developing country
specific conceptual frameworks and operationalizing the models to facilitate
improved decision making in health system strengthening efforts.
·
Duties
include: conducting literature review and synthesizing knowledge gaps,
developing study design and conceptualization of the research project in
collaboration with UNICEF colleagues and country offices, completing and
submitting ethics application, designing research tools and identifying

Doctoral Dissertation: Integration of HIV Services Into PrimaryHealth Care: A Health System Approach in Free State, South Africa (available upon request)
University of British Columbia, School
of Population and Public Health and
University of the Free State, Centre for
Health Systems Research & Development, South Africa 2010-14
·
Utilizing
a health systems framework developed by Kruk and Freedman, I designed a mixed
method study with the objective of analyzing the health system performance from
integrating HIV care into primary care clinics in Free State Province, South
Africa
·
Primary data collection and analysis
included:
o
(Patients/Caregivers) 910 Likert-scale surveys administered in
4 clinics in two waves, 10 months apart measuring participant reported quality
of care and satisfaction with staff, data analysis included: T-tests, Pearson’s χ2 -tests,
Mann-Whitney U tests and multiple linear regression
o
(Health Care Workers) 14 focus groups conducted in 8 clinics
(n=114) to elucidate the positive and negative aspects of integration on clinic
staff. Data analysis included: thematic content analysis and application to the
health systems framework
·
(Key Informants): 49 key informant interviews conducted
ranging from the Minister of Health, academics, provincial/district and local
area managers, to community health workers, nurse mentors etc., data analysis
included: thematic content analysis and application to the health systems
framework
·
Secondary data analysis included:
o (15
indicators of Primary Health Care from administrative data) selection and collation of aggregated, clinic-level
data, analysed to quantify the changes in trend in 131 primary healthcare as
clinics offering integrated HIV services from April 2009-2013, representing a
catchment population of 1.5 million, data analysis included: t-tests,
interrupted time series analysis at ±18 and ±30 months from integration and
linear mixed effect models
·
Knowledge
translation and dissemination utilized the Knowledge Exchange Decision Support
(KE-DS) framework by Kazanjian and included sharing evidence and conducting
policy advocacy to over 200 participants via meetings, focus groups, social
media, posters, presentations, conferences and the making of a documentary film
